Common curl myths we need to clear up

“Oils make my hair soft and shiny and healthy”

For a short period of time- yes. However, heavy oils coat the hair and can create build-up, preventing moisture from getting into the cuticle. Although hair can benefit from oil treatments, prolonged use of oils can have the opposite effect, drying the curls out even more. It can take multiple washes to remove oil build-up after prolonged use. Curls need hydration. Hydration is water. Water and oil do not mix. Save oils for treating scalp conditions such as dry scalp. See our scalp care guide for more information around this if you are concerned about the health of your scalp.

“I don’t need to shampoo my curls”

This is a common myth as well. It is important to care for your scalp as much as your hair. After all, your curls start at the scalp. Your scalp and your hair are two different things- the trick is to use a shampoo that not only cleanses your scalp but is also safe for your curls. This is why it’s important to check that your products are curl-friendly. If you do not care for your scalp then you are at risk of experiencing hair loss and scalp conditions overtime.

“I don’t have time to look after my curls”

Caring for your curls means giving your hair hydration, which comes down to the products you use. There are many different techniques that people with curly hair can incorporate into their wash day routine, however, don’t feel as though you have to do them all! Do what works for you. The main thing is that you are using products that are safe for your hair. Whether you air-dry or diffuse your curls, that is completely up to you. You can still get a great result from air-drying.

“I don’t have curly hair, I just have frizz”

Frizz is one of the biggest tell-tale signs that you have texture! 99.9% of new clients leave our salon with much curlier hair than what they walked in with. If you are not currently caring for your natural texture correctly right now, then what you currently see is most likely not your true hair texture! Frizz is not a hair type, it is a hair condition. Think of frizz as dry skin. We moisturise dry skin, and we also need to moisturise frizzy hair.
