How can i achieve volume?

Ah yes, volume. The goal for most curlies! There are many ways to boost the amount of volume with your curls but here’s a few tips and tricks of our own,

Start with a great curl cut. Curl layers are a great way to keep your tresses from looking flat or one dimensional, and it encourages waves/curls to have a bit more depth, shape and a lot more movement. Layers need to be cut following the dry curl cut technique though- you will not get a great result by getting a traditional layered cut. Layers can also remove the dreaded “triangle” shape commonly seen in curls, so there are multiple benefits to getting layers cut the correct way.

Being mindful with the amount of products used is also important. For finer hair, products need to be used in moderation and applied to the hair and not on the scalp. Combing wet curls up off the head may reduce hair from drying flat, especially when air drying.

Diffusing while tilting your hair forward makes a huge difference, as hair dries in the direction its brushed and styled to sit in. When diffusing, experiment with curl tools that help support your curls to lift up off the roots, such as a curl afro comb (see our curl tools and accessories on our website to purchase these directly). We recommend the curl comb, volume clips and also the metal root combs as tools to get you great volume during the drying stage.

Lastly, once dry, flip your hair upside down and give your scalp a good shake, but take care not to break up the curls. Simply slide your dry, clean fingers onto your scalp, rub the scalp a few times and then carefully slide them out again. You’ll see instant results, and you can do this later on in the day as well to wake up your curls and get that great shape back.
