Frizz is hair that does not align with the surrounding hair, resulting in a “halo” of frizz around the top and sides of your hair. People often mistaken frizz as a hair type when in fact it is a hair condition. There are many factors that create frizz, most commonly being humidity, a lack of hydration or damage from colouring and other chemical services which alter the texture and porosity of your hair (see our porosity blog for more info).

When the hair cuticles are open or damaged, moisture escapes very quickly, creating a frizzy silhouette. There are ways to manage this.

  • Reduce heated styling tools such as straighteners, curling wands, crimping irons, etc

  • avoid washing hair too much, as this strips oils that our curls need

  • use luke warm water on wash days instead of hot water

  • avoid harsh chemicals

  • use combs with wide teeth

  • microfiber towels for drying or wrapping, to avoid friction and prevent your curls from breaking up

  • use silk or satin hair accessories such as shower caps, scrunchies, pillowcases or bonnets (see our curl tools available online)

  • use the best high quality products
