Maintaining and caring for kid’s curls

When it comes to curly kids, you want to maintain their curls in the easiest way possible. Encouraging them to learn how to care for their own hair once they are old enough is the key, because the last thing you want to do is have your child hate their hair and neglect it. Neglecting your child’s curls will only make things worse over time, so get informed and start today. Make it simple, make it fast, and make it fun.

Detangling is never fun but it’s definitely the part you don’t want to skip. Detangling not only makes wash days easier but also helps with making the styling process a breeze for you and your child. Children are so active everyday, and their hair can get extremely matted if not detangled on a daily basis. Detangle your child’s curls while they are dry before washing or refreshing them for the day. Do this in 2 steps:

  1. find any knots in the hair and using your fingers, pull them apart horizontally. Knots are often caused by hair that has shed but get stuck in the curls and cause a knot. If left they just get bigger and can irritate the scalp, so this is why it is important to remove knots daily if possible.

  2. Once all knots are removed, then using a detangle brush (see our curl accessories and tools), start from the ends and make your way up to the roots. Be gentle, trying not to tug on the hair but gently going over it with the brush, removing all hair that has shed. By the time you are finished this step, the hair will be big, wild and frizzy, but it will be detangled and knot-free.

You can now go ahead and follow your wash routine, hydrating the curls and locking in moisture with quality curl products for their hair type.

Regular trims are a curls best friend. It is advised that you do not try this at home! Leave it to the specialists, as taking curl cuts into your own hands can result in an uneven grow out and very short lengths.

For diffusing, keep any curl tools on the lowest heat level or use a microfiber towel to remove any excess water and leave to airdry.

For further guidance please see our therapy programs, as these will give you product recommendations, a great method to follow, and you will ultimately understand your child’s curls, which you can then teach them when they are ready. Teaching them to embrace and celebrate their hair is the key, so if you too have curly hair but haven’t yet taken that first step for yourself, then maybe think about starting your curl journey together.

The main goal to remember is to keep it simple and keep encouraging them. Once they get into a great routine and they truly embrace their curls, both of your lives will drastically improve, especially when it comes to getting ready for school in the mornings! No more tears.
