What is a cast and why is it important?
A cast is when the styling products you use harden as they dry, forming defined, firm curls.
A cast is an important step in your curl routine as it forms a barrier to prevent moisture from evaporating from your hair as it’s drying.
Many people avoid using too much gel for this reason, as they prefer to have softer, more natural curls. The cast is not the end result, however. Once your curls have dried, you can then gently squeeze your curls to soften them to the desired result.
If you are not getting a firm cast then try adding more gel or a styling product with a hold factor into your routine. You can also get a cast from foam, mousse, and any other styling products that have holding agents in them. Styling products have different levels of hold, so your cast will also depend on the strength of the styling product you are using. Not all styling products have a level of hold, and products with the best hold are usually found in gels.
For less curlier hair types, a lower level of hold is recommended. The curlier and coarser the hair, the stronger hold you’ll need. If you have very curly, coarse hair that is prone to frizz, you could even leave the firm cast in your hair without “scrunching out the crunch” (S.O.T.C.). The cast will soften naturally overtime, and this is a great trick if you want your curls to stay tidy and frizz-free for as long as possible.
