How do i care for my scalp?

The condition of our scalp plays a huge part in our hair journey, so it’s important to remember: “healthy scalp, healthy hair”. The key to preventing hair from becoming dull and unhealthy is to look after the scalp first and foremost, ensuring that you use good quality products in your wash day routine.

In this day and age, the internet is the largest source of information, which can also lead to a lot of misinformation and confusion. Take co-washing for example- no doubt it has become a big thing within our curly community. The act of washing your hair solely with conditioners may seem like a good idea for a while, but long-term science says otherwise, and the effects can lead to multiple scalp conditions and complications.

Our scalp depends on cleansing agents to remove unnecessary oils, dead skin cells, dirt, product build-up and other environmental pollutants, where as a conditioner’s sole purpose is to keep the hair soft, shiny and smooth. Conditioners do nothing for the scalp.

Two washes with a shampoo/ low-poo cleanser are recommended, making sure to get into the areas that are hard to reach (back, middle area of the head). A good scalp cleanse should be done 2-3 times a week, as our scalp produces natural oils that our hair and scalp can benefit from. Over-washing our hair will strip out these oils, leaving our hair feeling dry and unsettled. Finding the right balance is key.

If you are concerned about your scalps current condition then book our Scalp Care Guide through our website to help identify scalp conditions, find out what could be the cause, and then you can get on top of the problem as soon as possible. Scalp conditions should not be ignored, as overtime they can get worse and can lead to more permanent and serious issues for both your scalp and your hair. Healthy scalp = healthy hair!

Co-wash if you must, but it is advised to incorporate a low-poo shampoo into your routine at least once in a while, to deep-clean your scalp and reset your curls.
